Climate Zones of Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is composed of five major ecological climate zones, each with its unique characteristics in terms of vegetation and animal life. These zones range from the tropical forest at the base to the arctic tundra at the summit. Climbing Kilimanjaro is often compared to walking from the equator to the North Pole due to the diversity of these zones.
Climate Zone 1: Cultivation Zone
- Altitude Range: 2,600 to 6,000 ft (792 to 1,800 m)
- Temperature Range:
- Days: 70-90°F (21-32°C)
- Nights: 40-60°F (4-15°C)
This zone is characterized by human activity such as grazing livestock and farming, which has altered the native vegetation. The fertile volcanic soil and ample rainfall, especially on the southern side, make it ideal for agriculture.
Climate Zone 2: Rain Forest Zone
- Altitude Range: 6,000 to 9,200 ft (1,800 to 2,800 m)
- Temperature Range:
- Days: 70-90°F (21-32°C)
- Nights: 40-60°F (4-15°C)
Encircling the mountain, this dense and damp montane forest is home to many bird and animal species. While big game is rare due to increased human activity, monkeys, birds, small antelope, rodents, and bush pigs can be found here.
Climate Zone 3: Heather and Moorland Zone
- Altitude Range: 9,200 to 11,000 ft (2,800 to 3,350 m)
- Temperature Range:
- Days: 50-80°F (10-27°C)
- Nights: 30-60°F (-1-15°C)
This zone features scrubby shrubs, giant heathers, and tussock grasses, with views opening up as the forest abruptly stops. Unique plants like giant lobelias and senecios thrive here, adapted to drastic temperature swings. Few animals inhabit this zone, though small rodents and occasional sightings of antelope or elephants occur.
Climate Zone 4: Highland Alpine Desert
- Altitude Range: 13,200 to 16,500 ft (4,020 to 5,030 m)
- Temperature Range:
- Days: 10-60°F (-12-15°C)
- Nights: 10-40°F (-12-4°C)
This barren, inhospitable zone has intense sun during the day and freezing temperatures at night. Water is scarce, and only hardy plants like mosses, lichens, and some tussock grasses can survive. The landscape is dominated by rugged rock formations and panoramic views.
Climate Zone 5: Arctic Summit Zone
- Altitude Range: 16,500 to 19,340 ft (5,030 to 5,895 m)
- Temperature Range:
- Days: 10-40°F (-12-4°C)
- Nights: -15-20°F (-26-(-7)°C)
This dry, freezing cold zone is characterized by glaciers, large boulders, and blustery winds. The oxygen level is half that of sea level, making it a harsh environment for any life. Only ancient, slow-growing lichens survive here. The extreme conditions require climbers to use sunscreen, stay hydrated, and wear warm layers to maintain their core temperature.
Traversing these diverse climate zones is part of what makes climbing Mount Kilimanjaro such a unique and challenging adventure. Each zone presents its own set of challenges and breathtaking beauty, contributing to the overall experience of the ascent.
